74th Araw ng Kagitingan

The 74th Araw ng Kagitingan ( Day of Valor ) is an annual tribute to the fallen and surviving heroes of World War II . It commemorates that fateful day on April 9 , 1942 when Filipino and American soldiers , weakened by injuries , starvation and disease, surrendered to the fierce Japanese forces. The ceremony was held at Mt. Samat Shrine in Diwa, Pilar , Bataan --- site of the violent conflict. Surviving veterans attended the event. Now feeble, wrinkled and bent by the years , the veterans still vividly remember their struggles during the war.

They could not help but feel nostalgic and emotional during the event. Leading the tribute to the veterans were President Benigno S. Aquino III, the US and Japanese Ambassadors, H.E Kazuhide Ishikawa and H.E Philip S. Goldberg. Pres. Aquino reiterated the much-deserved support that the government gives to the veterans such as the Veterans Hospitalization Program, free consultation to some of the accredited hospitals and the renovation of the operating room complex of the eye center. The president also mentioned the acceptance of the Jewish refugees in world war II.

The ambassador of America to the Philippines, H.E Philip Goldberg also recognized the veterans from Bataan. Japan ambassador H.E Kazuhide Ishikawa offered condolences for the people who died in the fall of Bataan during World War II. H.E Kazuhide Ishikawa also reminded the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Philippines. Let us continue to recognize and give importance to our noble veterans. Let us not forget the people who bravely fought for our country. #bataan
