Lifelines go digital: Rep. Roman pushes reliable connectivity for disaster response

Bataan 1st District Rep. Tony Roman III underscored the critical role of reliable digital connectivity during disasters as he took part in the PH Telecom Summit organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Rep. Roman highlighted that stable communication systems can spell the difference between timely rescue and delayed response, especially in disaster-prone areas like coastal and rural communities.

Speaking before government officials, telecom leaders, and disaster risk reduction advocates, Cong. Roman stressed that connectivity should be treated as an essential public service, particularly during emergencies.

He cited the importance of ensuring uninterrupted mobile and internet services to support early warning systems, coordination among responders, and real-time information for affected residents.

The lawmaker also joined a panel discussion with former Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman, where they shared policy insights and on-the-ground experiences on disaster preparedness. The panel tackled gaps in digital infrastructure, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, and discussed ways government and the private sector can work together to strengthen telecom resilience.

Rep. Roman pointed to national initiatives such as Konektadong Pinoy and Digital Bayanihan as key programs that aim to expand connectivity and promote cooperation among stakeholders. He said these efforts not only improve everyday access to digital services but also bolster the country’s readiness and protective measures during calamities.

He thanked the DICT for organizing the summit and providing a platform to amplify the call for inclusive and dependable connectivity, reiterating that investing in digital infrastructure is ultimately an investment in public safety. “Sa oras ng pangangailangan, ang koneksiyon ay nagiging lifeline ng bawat Pilipino,” Roman said.
