Reaching 16 years as an Authority and 56 as a zone gives Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB) a reason to look back and a clear view to go forward.
Under the leadership of Administrator and CEO Hussein Pangandaman, AFAB has continued to guide the Freeport with focus on reliability, consistency and practical progress. In a statement, Pangandaman said his administration has placed value on projects that improve how the Freeport works day to day-developments that create better conditions for business, for workers, and for the surrounding community.
The Freeport’s story began as Bataan Export Processing Zone (BEPZ) in 1969, the country’s first export processing hub. The “zone” as often referred to has become a fitting breeding ground for militant workers fanned by unstable work conditions and wages.
When it became the Freeport Area of Bataan in 2009, it opened a new chapter marked by diversification and stronger partnerships. Today, the FAB stands as one of Central Luzon’s key industrial zones, home to enterprises that continue to expand production and employment in the region.
Pangandaman points out the importance of balance: that the Freeport must continue to grow as an investment destination while remaining livable and well-managed.
