A historic reaffirmation of Philippine-Japan friendship took place on Sunday, August 17, as Bagac Mayor Ron Del Rosario welcomed Japanese lawmaker Ayaka Shiomura, Member of the House of Councilors of Japan, at the iconic Japan-Philippines Friendship Tower.
Mayor Del Rosario said Shiomura’s visit highlights the enduring historical and cultural ties between the two nations, symbolized by the towering monument built in 1975 to commemorate peace and reconciliation after World War II. “This visit reinforces the spirit of unity and cooperation that has long guided our relations with Japan,” the mayor noted.
Shiomura, a respected legislator under Japan’s Constitutional Democratic Party, is known for her advocacy on gender equality, women’s rights, and social reforms. Before entering politics, she was a well-known television announcer and journalist. She was elected to the House of Councillors in 2019, where she has since been active in committees on education, culture, and human rights.
The Japan-Philippines Friendship Tower, located near the site of the infamous World War II “Death March” endpoint in Bagac, stands as a monument of peace and a reminder of the deep friendship forged between the two countries after the war. The visit of Shiomura, local officials said, reaffirms Japan’s commitment to people-to-people diplomacy and continued cooperation in fostering development, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.
Mayor Del Rosario added that Bagac, as host to one of the most important symbols of reconciliation between the Philippines and Japan, takes pride in welcoming leaders who strengthen the foundations of peace. “We look forward to more meaningful exchanges that benefit not only our nations but also our communities,” he said.
