Bataan prevents stunting among kids

The Provincial Government of Bataan is taking concrete steps to curb stunting among children by facing challenges and identifying gaps that bluntly stand in the way of the health program.

Former Board Member Dr. Godofredo Galicia, Jr., provincial health committee consultant, said “Ayon sa ating Provincial Health Office, for the last three years ay less than 5 percent ang stunted sa ating mga bata 5 years old pababa.” Galicia has told the Congressional Committee on Education (Edcom II) that one of the biggest challenges of “our learners is stunting o pagka bansot.”

According to the United Nations Children Educational Fund (UNICEF), a third of Filipino children are stunted because of poor nutrition. The Philippines ranks fifth among countries in East Asia and Pacific with the highest stunting prevalence, and one of 10 countries with the highest number of stunted children in the world.

In a recent meeting of provincial health committee, Galicia said among the challenges the local government is facing now are problems like inactive barangay nutrition committee and lack of nutrition program management training.
