Gawad KALASAG

In a moment of pride and achievement, the Province of Bataan emerged victorious at the 24th Gawad KALASAG Seal for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and Humanitarian Assistance held on November 28, 2024, at the Laus Group Event Centre.

The province was honored with the prestigious Beyond Compliant Award, a recognition reserved for exceptional efforts in disaster preparedness and community resilience. Joining Bataan in receiving this high distinction were the municipalities of Abucay, Dinalupihan, and Orion, solidifying the province’s reputation as a leader in DRRM initiatives.

Meanwhile, the Fully Compliant Award was bestowed upon Balanga City and the municipalities of Bagac, Hermosa, Limay, Mariveles, Orani, Pilar, and Samal. These awards highlight their commitment to meeting and exceeding national standards in disaster readiness and response.

A unified effort for safety and resilience

Governor Joet Garcia attributed these accolades to the collective efforts of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and the unwavering dedication of local government units (LGUs). “Ang mga pagkilalang ito ay bunga ng ating sama-samang pagsisikap upang mapangalagaan ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan,” he said.

The recognition underscores Bataan’s proactive measures, from enhancing community-based disaster preparedness to implementing innovative DRRM programs. It also highlights the importance of collaboration across LGUs to safeguard communities from the threats of calamities.

A model for the nation

The Gawad KALASAG, which stands for “Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan,” is the country’s premier awards program for DRRM and humanitarian assistance. Bataan’s consistent performance in this arena sets a benchmark for other provinces, showcasing how strategic planning and community involvement can lead to sustainable resilience.
This victory reflects Bataan’s vision of becoming a safer, more disaster-resilient province, aligned with the overarching goal of “1Bataan” — unity in progress and development.

As the awards ceremony concluded, the message was clear: Bataan’s success in disaster preparedness is not just a recognition but a responsibility to inspire others to build a safer Philippines.
