Alarmed by spike in number suicide cases in the province, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Bataan is now crafting a provincial ordinance to at least control or minimize the number of people affected by mental illness.
Board Member Jorge Estanislao, chair of committee on health in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, said he sees no problem in creating the mental health ordinance. His committee held a hearing last week to consult health officers and local medical practitioners regarding the ordinance. “They are amenable to the move and said that the ordinance, in a way, will help prevent suicidal tendencies through counselling,” said Estanislao. The health personnel admitted there is still a need to train people who would deal with individuals having mental issues.
The Mariveles Mental Wellness and General Hospital operates with personnel not enough to serve patients from different towns of the province. Estanislao and another Board Member Antonino B. Roman III are coordinating to prepare the mental health ordinance.
