A 36-percent decrease in the volume of marine waste and 42-percent reduction or almost half of the total weight of collected waste from 2023 to 2024 was reported by EcoWaste Coalition.

The EcoWaste in partnership with De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, disclosed the findings of the 2024 Marine Litter Monitoring Survey Report at a press briefing in Quezon City last January 15.

The new survey report published in the Manila Times on January 18 said that EcoWaste conducted the survey in project sites in Brgy. Bantan in Orion, Brgy. Cabcaben, Agwawan Beach in Brgy. Sisiman, both in Mariveles, all in Bataan. Similar surveys were conducted in some beaches in Cavite and National Capital Region.

The environment group said that “plastics still represent a significant portion of marine debris accounting for 91-percent of the total collected waste with hard and film plastics being the most prevalent forms.”

During wet months, increase in plastics waste is more prevalent than during the dry season. The EcoWaste said these findings provide valuable insights into the current state of marine debris in the region.
