Mayor Robin Tagle of Abucay, had requested local residents to gather materials that could be used as oil spill boom to mitigate its spread.
The Mayor, in his social media page called out anyone who knows a farmer who can contribute coconut husks, a beauty salon or barber shop owner who can donate human hair to gather spilled oil from the Terra Nova motor tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil.
The Philippine-flagged vessel was on its way to Iloilo City on July 24 when it met giant waves brought by super typhoon Carina enhanced by southwest monsoon. The vessel was about to turn back when it sunk about 6 kilometers from Limay.
About 10 days later, another vessel carrying fuel also sunk near the vicinity of Barangay Cabcaben, Mariveles. Limay Mayor Nelson C. David has urged the Sanggunian Bayan to pass a resolution taking to task the owners of two ill-fated vessels.
