PGB conducts English workshop and news writing contest

In a continued effort to elevate English language proficiency among Bataeños, the Provincial Government of Bataan (PGB), through the Provincial Information Office (PIO), spearheaded two events in celebration of English Competency Week 2024.

On Tuesday, September 17, the PIO organized the “English Competency Workshop: Enhancing Proficiency in the Modern Workplace,” attended by representatives from various PGB departments and local government units who serve as the designated information officers of their respective offices.

Veteran journalist and university professor, Mr. Nestor Cuartero, served as the guest speaker wherein he shared valuable insights on crafting effective summary reports, news articles, and professional write-ups, which are essential tools for clear and impactful communication.

Provincial Board Member Atty. Antonino Roman III graced the said event and delivered an inspirational message on the importance of English proficiency. Atty. Roman, who is the principal author of the provincial ordinance establishing the first week of September as English Competency Week in Bataan, emphasized the critical role of language skills in both personal and professional growth.

On the following day, September 18, the PIO held a News Writing Competition for Campus Journalists, with 26 students from elementary and high schools across Bataan participating in an on-the-spot writing contest. The students were tasked with drafting a news article on the recent oil spill update in the province.

Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) professor Normita Lugtu and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Regional Director William Beltran served as judges for the competition who both offered words of encouragement to the aspiring young journalists, underscoring the importance of credibility and integrity in the field of journalism.

Winners from both the elementary and high school categories will be awarded each with cash prizes of PHP 5,000 for the first place, PHP 3,000 for the first runner-up, and PHP 2,000 for the second runner-up, along with certificates of recognition. The announcement of winners will be made in September 25 via the official Facebook page of Gov. Joet Garcia.
