Rep. Roman delivers relief goods to typhoon- stricken constituents

Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman, the first transgender person elected to the Philippine Congress, distributed relief goods to her fellow Bataeños who are in need of assistance after the onslaught of tropical cyclones Egay and Falcon in the province.

Congresswoman Roman shared photos of her humanitarian activity on her Facebook page, where she expressed her gratitude and solidarity with the people of Bataan. “Bayanihan ng mga Bataeño! (Cooperation of the Bataeños!) I delivered relief goods as help to our fellow Bataeños who are in need. It warms my heart to see their smiles. I hope that the food we gave will help them. Let us continue to unite and help each other,” she wrote in Filipino.

Roman, who is also the chairperson of the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality, has been advocating for the welfare and rights of her constituents, especially the marginalized sectors such as women, children, senior citizens, and LGBT+ community. She is also one of the authors of the SOGIE Equality Bill, which aims to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Roman has been recognized internationally for her achievements and contributions as a lawmaker and a leader. She was named as one of the 100 Leading Global Thinkers of 2016 by US-based Foreign Policy magazine; one of “13 Inspiring Women of 2016” list by Time magazine; and one of the “100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the World” by the Filipina Women’s Network in 2017.
