Bataan First District Representative Geraldine Roman took to social media to celebrate Women’s Equality Day on August 26. In her post, she reaffirmed her commitment to a world where everyone, regardless of gender, enjoys equal opportunities and rights.
Women’s Equality Day is observed in the United States to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. Congresswoman Roman has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and gender equality in the Philippines. She was instrumental in launching the passage of the anti-discrimination bill on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (now known as the SOGIE Equality Bill) through a speech in the House of Representatives that garnered international support for LGBT rights in the Philippines. She has also filed bills regarding eco-tourism, livelihood enhancements, agriculture advancements, health, and education, which were the advocacies of her family, and were focused on the first district of Bataan. She was named as one of the “13 Inspiring Women of 2016” by Time magazine in October 2016. In her post, she used the hashtags #PambansangCongresswoman, #GeraldineRomantik, and #WomensEqualityDay to express her pride and solidarity with women around the world. She also added an orange heart emoji to symbolize her passion and enthusiasm for her cause. Roman’s post received positive reactions from her followers, who praised her for her courage and leadership. Some also thanked her for being a role model and inspiration for women and LGBT people in the Philippines.
