The Special Defense Economic Zone (SpeDEZ) Act, authored and sponsored by Senator Migs Zubiri in the Senate and by Congressman Abet Garcia and Congresswoman Gila Garcia in the House of Representatives, has been approved on its second reading in the Senate.
This proposed legislation aims to establish a special defense economic zone within the Government Arsenal in the town of Limay for investments in defense, military, law enforcement, defense-related advanced technologies, information and communications technology, research and development, and their support industries.
To ensure the efficient management and operation of the said economic zone, the bill also seeks to create the Special Defense Economic Zone Authority (SpeDEZA), an independent and specialized corporate body tasked with implementing the provisions of the act and overseeing the zone’s development.
The bill is expected to boost the country’s economy and generate numerous job opportunities by encouraging investors to set up businesses and factories related to defense within the economic zone.
Said legislation marks a significant step toward achieving a self-reliant national defense while driving economic growth that will uplift the lives of Filipinos nationwide.
