When fully operational, the Special Defense Economic Zone inside the Government Arsenal Defense Industrial Estate in Barangay Lamao, Limay, Bataan will benefit not only Bataan residents but the whole of Central Luzon.
This was explained by Bataan 2nd District Rep. Albert S. Garcia who presided over the 2nd Quarter Meeting of the Regional Development Council in DepDev Regional Office 3, City of San Fernando, Pampanga last May 21.
Rep. Garcia discussed the salient parts of Senate Bill No. 2900, “An Act Establishing a Special Defense Economic Zone Inside the Government Arsenal Defense Industrial Estate Located in Camp Gen. Antonio Luna, Lamao, Limay, Bataan Creating for this Purpose the Special Defense Economic Zone Authority and appropriate funds therefor” and Senate Bill No. 2799 or “The Act Creating the Metro Bataan Development Authority, and Providing Funds Therefor.”
The Government Arsenal, founded in 1957, churns out small firearms, weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).
The twin bills aim to boost the economy and strengthen security not only “in our province but also in the whole region by promoting projects that will provide more jobs, businesses, and investment opportunities to our countrymen,” said the reelected congressman.
He added, “Through meetings like this, we expect broader support from different sectors for our region’s continuous development.”
Bataan is the second fastest growing province in Central Luzon. It has a population of roughly 900,000. The region, comprising seven provinces has a population of more or less 14 million.
