Bataan Ranks 8th in both basic and functional literacy nationwide

Bataan has emerged among the top-performing provinces in the country in terms of literacy after placing at the 8th spot nationwide in both basic and functional literacy in the 2024 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

According to the survey results, Bataan recorded a basic literacy rate of 93.64%, meaning nearly 94 out of every 100 Bataeños aged 5 years old and above are able to read, write, and perform basic computations. This figure is higher than the national average basic literacy rate of 90.0%.

In the same report, Bataan also ranked 8th in functional literacy with a rate of 77.8%, wherein the national average is at 70.8%. This metric, which applies to individuals aged 10 to 64, goes beyond basic reading and writing to include comprehension and the practical application of written information in everyday life.

The Provincial Government of Bataan in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), continues to enhance the delivery of educational services through impactful initiatives. These efforts include continuous rehabilitation and construction of classrooms and school facilities to address infrastructure needs and improve access to quality education, as well as the provision of MacBooks to public elementary and high school teachers to support digital learning and innovative teaching methods. The Iskolar ng Bataan program also continues to expand, providing financial assistance to deserving college students across the province. Moreover, academic achievers and outstanding students are regularly recognized to foster a culture of achievement and inspire continued scholastic excellence.

The province’s literacy performance reflects the sustained efforts of local government units, educators, and community-based programs that prioritize education and learning. As Bataan continues to invest in inclusive education and greater access to knowledge resources, its placement in the national top 10 underscores a strong commitment to human development.
