Some 60 members of YoungBataenos for Environmental Advocacy Network (YoungBEAN) launched last Sunday a clean-up drive in Barangay Camachile, a thriving mangrove area in Orion.
The activity caps the End Plastics Pollution month of January series of events held by YoungBEAN to raise awareness among youth and the community the worsening plastics pollution killing mangroves and destroying the ocean’s biodiversity.
“But it is not too late yet to take action against plastics pollution. There’s still time if we only act together to end this problem,” said Enrique Beren, secretary general of YoungBEAN.
Mangroves support the production of foods that benefit not only communities thriving along the coastlines; they also serve as natural defense against storm surge and potential flooding and sea-level rise as result of climate in crisis.
In a related development, Philippines is among the top waste generators in Southeast Asia, with 18.05 million tons of garbage in 2020 that is projected to reach 23.61 million tons in 2025, according to the National Solid Waste Commission.
