DTI: ‘No return, no exchange’ practice is prohibited’

The “no return, no exchange” practice should not be imposed by business establishments on consumers. Ms. Eileen Ocampo, chief of consumer protection division of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)- Bataan, said under the Consumer Act, a buyer may return the product if it is defective. “Ang hindi puwede yung change of mind,” said Ocampo.

The DTI recently reminded commercial establishments implementing the “no return, no exchange” policy to stop the practice amid reports from different provinces that some retailers are still enforcing this rule more particularly this Christmas season. The consumers should take note that merchants should give buyers a seven-day warranty period for their products citing that some retailers even offer as long as 180 days.

So far the local DTI office has yet to receive complaints on the “no return, no exchange” practice,” Ocampo said.
