At the age of 23, Jefferleene Infante earned the title of Binibining Bataan, but prior to wearing the crown, she was first an SM Scholar, a Management Accounting graduate from PUP Manila (Cum Laude, Class of 2023), and a former employee of SM Foundation Inc. For her, the SM College Scholarship was not just a financial aid—it was a life-changing opportunity.
Without the SM Foundation’s support, Jefferleene’s dreams of studying in Manila might have remained just that—a dream. Financial struggles could have kept her in Bataan, limiting her opportunities. A defining moment came during the pandemic when her laptop broke. Thanks to the stipend she had saved, she was able to buy a new one immediately, ensuring that her studies remained uninterrupted.
Beyond easing financial burdens, the SM scholarship became a powerful source of motivation. Knowing that she had to maintain good grades to keep her scholarship, she pushed herself to excel. Her dedication paid off when she received a job offer from SM Foundation even before graduating—an opportunity she never imagined possible.
For Jefferleene, the most valuable lesson from the scholarship was not just academic success but the importance of believing in others. “It taught me that because someone believed in me, I now have the chance to believe in others,” she shares. Inspired by the generosity she received, she is now committed to paying it forward, helping others achieve their dreams just as she did.
Her family also felt the life-changing impact of the scholarship. With two children in college, her parents faced significant financial strain. The cost of transportation between Bataan and Manila alone was around ₱700 per round trip, on top of rent and other expenses. But the scholarship lifted these burdens, allowing her to focus on her education without constant financial worries.
One of the most unforgettable experiences of Jefferleene’s journey was watching Disney on Ice in 2019—an event she had only dreamed of as a child. That day, she also met a fellow SM Scholar, and their instant connection led to a lasting friendship. This moment reminded her that the scholarship was more than just financial support—it was a gateway to new experiences and lifelong relationships.
“Limits are meant to be challenged, not accepted,” Jefferleene says. “The SM College Scholarship is more than just financial aid—it’s a chance to rewrite your story, overcome barriers, and create the future you’ve always envisioned.” From a determined scholar to a crowned queen, her journey proves the power of education, perseverance, and the impact of giving back. For aspiring SM Scholars, applications for incoming college freshmen are open from February 1 to March 31, 2025. Visit www.sm-foundation.org for more details.
