Bataan Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” S. Garcia III rewarded ₱100,000 in cash incentives, each of the 10 fishermen from Barangay Sisiman in Mariveles who turned over to authorities an estimated ₱1.5 billion worth of shabu they found floating at sea.
The fishermen discovered ten sacks containing 223 vacuum-sealed packs of methamphetamine hydrochloride, weighing more than 222 kilograms, on May 29. They promptly reported their discovery and turned the contraband over to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine National Police (PNP). The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) verified the contents and commended the fishermen for their integrity.
In a simple ceremony held June 9 at The Bunker, Gov. Garcia said the giving of incentives is a way to recognize the fishermen’s honesty and their important role in partnering with national and local authorities in keeping the community safe. He also encouraged the public to follow their example and let their actions serve as an inspiration to always choose what is right.
The boat captain who refused to be named expressed his group’s gratitude to the provincial government and shared that the incentive money will be used to start a small business to help support their families.
The ceremony was also attended by Board Member Romano “Popoy” del Rosario, other members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, PNP Bataan Provincial Director Police Colonel Marites Salvadora, PCG Acting Commander LTJG Jesus Mandi, DILG LGOO V Ayla Theresa Bugay Quimlat and other representatives from national government agencies.
